I'm a historian of technology, and the popular misconception of the Luddites truly grinds my gears. Going into the book, I was completely clueless on the topic! Such a good book.

Other good, non-academic books people interested in not being techno-screwed could check out are Breaking Things at Work: The Luddites Were Right About Why You Hate Your Job by Gavin Mueller and Internet for the People: The Fight for Our Digital Future by Ben Tarnoff.

If the widget-making machine makes the widgets twice as fast, does that mean we make the same number of widgets but give the widget-workers Thursdays and Fridays off?

No, it does not.

OK, does it mean they continue to work the same hours, but get paid twice as much?

Sorry, no again to that.

All right, so if they continue to work the same hours, and get paid the same as before, does it mean The Widget King gets a gigantic bonus at the end of the year?

OK, now you're on to something.

Thanks for recommending Mehdi's new platform! I signed up, looking forward to seeing where my favorite fast-talkin' lefty goes with this.

Thanks for making this post! I was a freelancer for the LA Times over the summer and was sidelined over my social media coverage of Palestine protests in LA. I decided to go fully independent and launch my own newsletter and podcast on substack. Always appreciate finding other journalists who stand on business

Just saw (heard on YouTube?) the interview Brian Merchant did with Adam Conover on his podcast. Read your recommendation and thought, "Hey! I've heard of that guy!" 😅
