1st off, Parker... nice work creating your likeness in the game! I don't know about you, but whenever I try to create one in my likeness on *any* game, I strike out (pun intended). It's gotta be so much more rad to play the game like this. I'll likely check out the new version of The Show when it hits Game Pass, though, like you, I am definitely not good at it. But, I do have fun playing it!

2nd of all, I wasn't paying attention too much during the whole Gamergate thing. I have since read up on it, and I find the whole thing abhorrent, naturally. But, given that it's an election year, and also because Bannon/Milo/(insert other terrible far-right'ers) were paying so much attention to Gamegate and have said openly about it's connection to inspiring more "dudes" to get into politics to make it even more dirty, which was one of the keys to getting Trump elected... don't you find Musk's comments a bit more sinister, as well as troubling?

Let's face it, the Gamergaters are with Musk. There's no question about it. But, if he were to influence his cult into more of a Gamergate crowd with bigger numbers this time, I feel it could have worse ramifications than in 2014-16. I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist, but this does have a feeling of intent to it. I fear this anger and outrage could definitely seep into the mainstream much easier than last time.

In closing, the age old question: why can't people just play the games they like, how they like? Why should it be threatening that you can take a *video game* character, mod said character to your actual physical likeness of race, gender, or size and play the game how YOU would want to? I just don't understand it. Why do there people get SO heated about it? It's just a game, after all.

And they don't have to play the game the same way everyone else does!

And that right there is a maxim that is true to video games, as well as real life.

This is what The Richest Man in the World does in his spare time. Complain that there are icky girls in his video games.

I'm always thankful to have your analysis now adays for these sort of escapades. I don't have the time to really dive into them like I used to. They frequently seem to be the catalyst for bigger issues, so it's good to be in the know.

The only thing unrealistic is that OPS!!! Interested in why you picked 13, I don't feel like there have been a ton of Cubs with that number, anyone in particular inspire it?

I'm also a big fan of The Show and this is a cool new feature! (So, of course, some backwards-ass fools will cry about it. *sigh*)

That said, video games are only going to be more inclusive going forward, because casting a wider net is good for that business even if it gets the bellies of some ignorant chuckleheads all in a roil. I mean, look at Baldur's Gate 3, which sold millions upon millions of copies. It was one of the most inclusive games I've played with options for creating non-binary characters, romances open to any gender, and even many gay and lesbian NPCs that you meet throughout the game. This only added to the richness of that world, so I don't see studios moving backwards from this model.

Lastly, as some others have said, your OPS is absolutely absurd, Parker. Way to rake! 😀

Appreciated the slow walk to start the home run trot there. Can you edit how you react when you hit a home run? That would be fun - I'd have the highest bat flip of all time.

Wait, you have an OPS over 3.000 and the Cubs are STILL under .500?

This just shows how accurately the game represents the real world. I grew up with a Cubs team with a roster full of future hall-of-famers who couldn't even win their division.

Look, I’m all for diversity in video games, but I agree that there needs to be a line.

For me, it’s ice wizards.

When I see a female ice wizard, it just pulls me right out of the game. It’s simply not believable. I’m not saying there should be no female wizards. Obviously fire wizards make sense, and women of course have the same spiritual connection to the elements that can be awakened with the proper training. But ice wizard training is especially grueling and lifting that amount of ice requires a lot of upper body strength. Magic by itself can’t make up for that.

Sometimes straight cis men don’t make sense either. I mean I don’t think you could convince me there’s a necromancer who could resurrect enough dead to defeat a dragon god who isn’t a trans lesbian! Their skills are unparalleled.

I’m just saying it can’t be “anything goes”. You can’t just make up whatever you want in a video game, it has to make sense.

The "unrealistic" criticism is so transparently stupid. It's not like Cubs 1B Parker Molloy is showing up in everybody else's copy of the game unbidden. Anybody can play an unmodified version of the game with no custom characters if they want the game's best attempt at realism.

True, it's also an example of their real complaint about trans people, which is not that they, personally, might ever have to interact with anyone who is trans, but that trans people are allowed to exist at all.

Gamergate was a Steve Bannon operation to rally youth subcultures for Trump. It's absolutely no coincidence that this is happening in conjunction with a Trump campaign the same as it happened last time. I'm going to write about this over on my own newsletter soon.

That you can create a female avatar to play MLB in a video game does not bother me at all, nor does the presence of FemShepherd in Mass Effect. And so on.

It is also the case that some people write stuff that may have ideology I fundamentally agree with but is badly written, and comes across as too agenda driven. And when it comes to film, there's also the issue of whether the acting works or not.

Of course, the usual suspects you name aren't really complaining about the acting. They are complaining about the entire idea of cross-casting. You know, like making a Broadway musical based on the idea that Alexander Hamilton and colleagues can and should be played by black performers, and that this is not only appropriate but illuminating.

This *is* a new idea, and maybe takes some getting used to. Not that I think what they say even manages to express this in any nuanced or relatable way.

However, I once saw Macbeth staged with a very big (in the wide as a wall) and powerful black man playing MacBeth opposite a tall blonde white woman playing Lady Macbeth. This *cough* is not what I'd call "race-blind" casting. It's meant to have you think about the characters in certain ways. (I loved it, I saw so much in the text I hadn't seen before).
