According to Planned Parenthood, which estimates that 1-2 out of 100 (not 10,000) people are born intersex, surgeries are often performed on intersex children to make them conform to one sex or the other. I have the feeling that Rick Scott and his ilk are fine with those surgeries on minors.
In states that have introduced bans on trans kids getting medical care, they’ve also included carve-outs to specifically allow for those to continue, sad to say. Section 4, subsection B in this bill (which includes a number of false claims in its text) currently awaiting action in Alabama is one example https://www.billtrack50.com/BillDetail/1447135
I've tried to educate a friend of mine who is LGBTQ friendly but is really hung up on 'there are only two sexes' and 'trans girls in sports is unfair'. We work in animal science are studying a bull who is XX (genotypically female) and phenotypically male, but intersex really, trying to learn if there's a genetic cause, and I hope this example made her question her certainty on these issues.
Parker, my youngest sibling came out to me as trans in their late 40s. They considered transitioning, but decided against it after taking hormones for a while and decided to keep the original body, so really they are non-binary.
But since coming out they have achieved a level of happiness and openness that they never had before. And thanks to all who have come out before, I was prepared to accept them when they came out.
I'm a scout leader in BSA, and we have a scout who just came out as trans.
They came out after their parents found they were planning to commit suicide, because their brother bullied them over being trans. And that's what scares me the most about all of this - that there have been thousands of trans kids like our scout, and there will be thousands more, all motivated by this kind of crap.
Your work at MMFA and here has really inspired me over the last couple of years to really rethink how I talk about these issues - not just that it's a human and civil rights issue, but how absolutely stressful it is day in and day out to see who you intrinsically are attacked, and that every fight over this is yet another kick in the teeth to every trans person's mental health (and to their families). And it's time for the rest of us to stop being quiet, and stop making trans folks have to defend their right to exist every day.
One thing to add before my rant... How the hell is Rick Scott, Medicare fraudster, still in power?
One of the conversations with my family that drove me off of Facebook happened when several of them were just plain outraged that trans women could compete in women's Olympic events. There was a large discussion about trans women having too much testosterone, which they didn't let up on when I pointed out hormone testing ends up disqualifying some cis gendered women too.
Then there was a long discussion that essentially boiled down to, "If you're born with a penis, you're a man." Again I made little headway in 1) pointing out that a penis does not give you any sort of athletic prowess that would make you dominate women's sports, 2) the existence of trans people totally refutes that statement, and 3) people are born with ambiguous genitalia, so what about them?
The final iteration of their argument was chromosome testing. If you come back XY, you're a man. And this is where I started to feel like Professor Farnsworth debating Dr. Banjo. The missing link in this case of course is a woman with XY chromosomes who gave birth to a daughter with XY chromosomes. It's kinda hard to dispute she's a woman in spite of her chromosome testing results.
I didn't really expect their argument to fall apart, because it really all boils down to ignorant or confused people not wanting their perception of the world to be questioned. In this case it seemed to be mostly about how there are somehow two genders of sports that are inviolable.
I honestly wonder if I planted a nugget that might have changed someone's mind. The closest I got in real time was one person who said, "Well, exceptions always happen." Of course their point was an "obvious" woman with XY chromosomes should be allowed, but a trans woman is still banned. Being born with the "wrong" chromosomes I guess is not your fault, but being assigned the wrong gender at birth... nothing we can do about that.
I don't think I've ever seen you need to work so hard to moderate the comments section, Parker. All you were saying is that we're entitled to a full human existence. People who disagree with that thesis lead empty and unfulfilling lives, and won't be happy until everyone else leads similarly unrewarding lives. Unfortunately, that description fits an alarming number of people these days.
Abbott's directive, in addition to turning people into trans-reporting vigilantes, seems to be requiring the state to investigate children to make sure they have the genitalia they were born with. Of course, this is the same Republican party that demanded the right to not be forced to take a vaccine that would lessen their chances of dying from a deadly virus, due to the fact that their bodily autonomy was being violated. This country is getting more dystopian every day.
Parker, I appreciate you and your opinion on these issues specifically because I am not trans. Thank you for this thorough response to scott's bullshit.
Hi, Alex. "It’s also dangerous to let minors make life changing decisions about gender reassignment surgery because some have lived to bitterly regret it." Maybe if you knew how to read, you'd see that I specifically address the "surgery" nonsense repeatedly. So good luck with your Hooked on Phonics. Get back to me when you can comprehend a compound sentence.
Alex, you responded to my post by yelling over things that I specifically addressed. If you're not going to respect my time, I'm not going to let you use my page as an open mic. Now go away. Thank you.

The "No doctor shall be allowed to perform" part, if it is already part of Texas law, would seem to make that illegal, as well.

Because there is no justice.

I honestly think the modern American right is hell-bent on turning their entire base into the Stasi.

Oh my goodness, nobody should wallow in the alt right hellscape without then taking a two month vacation in the Bahamas to recover. Best to you!
