Excellent piece, glad to see Evan's work exposed to more people.

I think it's been under-discussed, though, that DeSantis is still very young - he can run for President another eight times before he's as old as Trump - and he did very well in his last election. The GOP establishment pushing his queer phobic hobby horse are the same folks who worked 50 years to get Roe overturned. They're just getting started.

Agreed, excellent piece. Thanks for outsourcing it so perfectly. The people in my family are refugees from the manufactured moral panic that Evan describes. We left our longtime home in Texas for bluer skies in NM. But as I write, neighboring state Utah is on the verge of erasing trans identities throughout the state’s legal and physical presence. I hope it doesn’t get signed into law, but it might. And there will be one more state my family will have to avoid. All for nothing, too. For posturing and fomenting hate and perceived political advantage. It’s both heartbreaking and terrifying to be trans in America right now.

Republicans are people who are VERY resistant to taking in new information and ideas. And that's not a claim about anyone's cognitive ability, it's just the essence of conservatism that you start with a limited set of bigoted attitudes handed down to you by your parents and carry these all the way to the grave. Maybe the anti-trans thing was just too novel, too complicated, for an audience that only wanted to hear the Oldies? Give 'em the racism and misogyny, just play the hits, nobody wants to hear that new "experimental" stuff on your second album.

It's tragic that the trans-hatin' will continue in Republican-controlled state legislatures for years to come. But imagine how much worse it would be if DeSantis had actually succeeded? Republican politicians all over the country would see this issue as the one that's going to get them up one more rung on the ladder: "If it worked for DeSantis, it'll work for me, right?" Now, perhaps we'll see less of it, not because they recognize that it's wrong (No, they NEVER do that) but because they're busy looking for some other grift, some other moral panic to boost their fortunes. Because these people are totally without principles, and only care what'll bring in the bucks and the votes.
