When Texas Republicans gerrymandered at Trump’s direction, the Washington Post told readers to calm down. When Virginia Democrats responded, the editorial board found the end of democracy.
Why do Democrats always have to be the models of decorum and civility while Trump and the rest of the GOP get to run roughshod over the very concept of individual liberties? I'm frankly sick of all this pantomimed pearl-clutching from major media outlets that occurs when people with actual scruples are expected to feel shame while others act with careless disregard and we just sort of shrug our shoulders. I don't particularly like partisan redistricting either, but Dems have to figuratively and literally draw the line somewhere.
Happy Birthday, Parker. Sorry you have to keep writing about how much the WaPo editorial section sucks now.
Looks like Murc's Law: Republicans are like a force of nature, getting mad at them for "hardball politics" makes as much sense as yelling at the hurricane that blew down your house. Yell all you want, the hurricane doesn't care. The Democrats, OTOH, might actually listen to your complaints and refrain from doing something bad, so let's direct ALL the criticism at the Democrats.
I hate that we have to do this, but I also think we have to do this. It's worth thinking about how we got a treaty banning the use of poison gas in warfare, a treaty honored even by the Nazis. And it's because both sides used poison gas in WWI, making it clear that there was no advantage to be gained. Not saying partisan gerrymandering is poison gas, just that if you want to send the message "no advantage to be gained", that's what California and Virginia just did, loud and clear.
Great, deep-dive into the loaded language in the coverage from WAPO! I always appreciate your perspective. Hope you are able to enjoy a birthday celebration - you deserve it.
i canceled my post subscription when my favorite columnists moved to substack and the editorial suite stopped pretending it wasn't a murdoch operation.
i really miss carolyn hax, but i couldn't watch the slow strangling of a legendary paper.
At this point the Washington Post is essentially an Amazon newsletter.
Happy birthday, Parker! Enjoy the birthday weekend.
