Trans rights, the Boss Baby war, and my bad brain

It was a busy week, so let’s jump right in.

On Monday, I published a newsletter about Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL)’s proposals to effectively drive trans people out of public life in a roundabout way. Couching his anti-trans views in faux concerns for “the children,” Scott wants to make it illegal for trans kids to get the medical treatment they need. If you have time to read just one of my pieces from this week, make it this one.

GOP Sen. Rick Scott has a terrifying plan to drive transgender people from public life
Hello, readers. Here’s hoping you had a pleasant weekend! I’ve got a lot to say, so let’s get right to it. Last Tuesday, Politico published an article about Florida Senator and head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee Rick Scott’s “11 Point Plan to Rescue America: What Americans Must Do to Save This Country…

Getting a lot of "Boss Baby" vibes from this war...
Hello, dear readers. I hope you’re having a good day. I haven’t posted a whole lot about the situation in Ukraine, and there’s a really good reason for this: I’m not an expert, and I try to know enough to know what I don’t know. This is one of those ideas that I’ve been trying to internalize since reading a really smart piece published by…

And yesterday, I posted a quick little blog post about feeling overwhelmed by current events and hyperconnectivity. It was a chance for me to express myself a little bit in animations, too, which was a fun little exercise.

Bad brain blog
A little while back, I created a section within the larger The Present Age infrastructure for things that were a little more off-the-cuff and a little less structured than my standard posts. These will be posts that I tend not to send out via email as actual newsletters, though I may sometimes do that. I called it…

Posts from others that I want to draw attention to:

Attacks on trans people (and specifically, trans kids) have been roaring right along, so this week’s recommendations all have to do with that.

First, Lyz Lenz named “people outlawing trans girls from sports” as her “dingus of the week.” The post deals with what’s currently happening in her home of Iowa.

This is the Weekly Dingus. The Friday newsletter, where I round up my internet reads, share a drink recipe, and vent about something really dingusy that happened in the news. This week, it’s anyone trying to ban books. But it could be anyone? Maybe it’s a boat…

Texas is taking aggressive action targeting trans youth and their families. It raises the prospect that children who receive medically appropriate care could be taken away from their parents. The effort started with a February 18 opinion issued by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R). T…

Breaking news from me: after TX Gov Abbott and AG Paxton's new directive to investigate gender-affirming care as child abuse, at least one Texas family with a trans child is already under investigation. Now, that family is taking the state to court.
