My wife is an Episcopal priest and though she doesn't know Budde personally her reputation in the church is as one of our absolute best. I'm so proud to see someone from our denomination speaking truth to power like that, damn the consequences. We were talking about it and my wife said "she might get killed for that", and I initially thought she was speaking metaphorically but no, she meant literally. And she's probably right! What a world.

So well articulated, Parker. Thanks for laying out what was in my head and heart.

Turns out Bishop Budde was following her own advice from her aptly titled book: How We Learn to be Brave - Decisive Moments in Life and Faith https://bookshop.org/p/books/how-we-learn-to-be-brave-decisive-moments-in-life-and-faith/18868677

The entire service was about unity. Here's a discussion of the structure by an experienced Pastor. https://www.emptywheel.net/2025/01/22/herod-goes-to-the-national-cathedral-and-is-disappointed/

The primary tactic of the creepy right wing, including its Christian Dominionist faction, is to single out a few words and pretend apopletic rage. For normal people that would get old after 30 years, but apparently the rubes love it.

IMO this stuff could really reach the mainstream libs. My MIL is an episcopalian and is *incensed* that her church is getting targetted. Not sure how much more she could hate Trump anyway, but it could keep that type engaged?

A radical left wing Episcopalian bishop? Who knew. Anyone calling her a Marxist? Can we give that person the Oxymoron of the year award? Or just Moron.

Thank you, Parker.

There has always been a price to be paid for speaking out in America.

Conservatives think “unity” means “shut up and do what we say.” And if that sounds like living in an abusive household, well, yeah.

Trump is weak. He will not succeed.

True, a federal judge just blocked his ridiculous attempt to destroy the 14th amendment. He's not a king, he will be blocked many times on many things.

Too bad for him the judge was man, so he couldn't use his standard "nasty woman" insult.

Why, there's just nothin' to work with here, AT ALL. C'mon, people, aspiring standup comic Trump needs better material than this!

She simply could not ignore the present threat. They despise hearing the teachings of Jesus; they prefer the Old Testament, especially Leviticus.

"The important thing to remember here is that Budde is still standing."

Yes, this is important to say. Republican Idiot Congressman (but I repeat myself, twice) says she should be deported. She won't be. This is rage, but it's impotent rage, because they can't do what they want under the law. We should remember that.

She overstepped her lane and did political activism. She was an embarrassment to the church.

Yeah, God forbid a Bishop ask someone who has just claimed to be god's choice for president to consider being merciful.

I'm all for keep all religion out of all politics.

The interest of the founders was to keep politics out of religion, not keep religion out of politics.

Frank's America: Each of us is assigned to a "lane." If we speak in any way that "oversteps our lane" we deserve to be murdered. Helluva country ya got there, Frank.

"deserved to be murdered" is 100% in your Democrat lane, not mine.

"No I'm not, YOU are!" Along with being an Episcopalian, Frank, are you also a member of the Oxford University Debate Team?

I have no interest for idiot perpetually wrong Democrat partisans to be murdered. My job is to keep tweaking their ubiquitous uncontrolled emotions to get them to put their cat down and screech their vile invective and absurd mutterings for everyone else to see. I would have no subjects to work on if they were murdered.

Let's recap: A woman speaks critically of President Trump. Right-wing TV personalities accuse her of being Satan, say "hell was made for her", knowing that their viewership is heavily armed and inclined to violence. At the same time, Trump pardons 1600 violent criminals, sending the message that violence in service of Trump will be condoned.

Frank thinks this is all a game.

Let's recap:

"A woman"? How do you know. She is a Bishop. The criticism is of the role of a Bishop. Catch up.

"Right-wing TV personalities accuse her of being Satan" Have not read nor heard that. I think maybe you have voices in your head.

"Viewership heavily armed". Well it is Democrat viewership doing all the assassination attempts.

"1600 violent criminals" Not the old people that protested on Jan-6. Now maybe you are talking about the 2020 BLM and Antifa Democrat riots that all your Soros' elected DAs failed to charge or prosecute. Or the tens of thousands of violent criminals your defund the cops movement failed to charge or prosecute. Or those that have been released. Or the 700,000 criminal illegal immigrants your cabbage old man Joe invited in.

SteveB thinks... well no, not really.

There are countless examples of preachers in evangelical and southern baptist churches explicitly endorsing MAGA, trump, the GOP, etc. I'll bet you think they're all embarrassments to the church as well.

Yes, a preacher sharing a message of loving your neighbor. How inappropriate.
