From me this week: self-censorship and bad vibes
On Monday, I published a piece about the laziness that is the “cancel culture”/”self-censorship” genre of takes… along with a few ideas about how to fix it.
And then on Tuesday, I wrote about the big flood of COVID-19-related news, concerns about the wave hitting other parts of the world, and the fact that the federal government is basically out of funding for things like testing, treatment, and whatnot. So I guess we’re just supposed to hope for the best? Yay…
The Present Age is a reader-supported project. From now until the end of the month, I’m offering free 90 day trials to the premium-tier newsletter content. If you like it and think it’s worth paying for, that’s great. If you don’t think it’s worth paying for, just cancel the trial before the 90 days is up. Sound good? Click this link to get it:
No links this week. Hope everyone has a good weekend.
I agree in part with the New York Times today. "Freedom of Speech" is more than the First Amendment; heck, it precedes the First Amendment, which is how they could just write "freedom of speech" and trust that people would know what they mean. It does indeed mean the freedom to speak without being shamed or shunned. People ought to be able to speak freely without fear of losing their jobs. It just doesn't and can't work that way because a) other people have rights, including their own free speech and freedom of association, including the right to not associate with you if they don't like what they say; and b) we live in a society, so just as there as other freedoms whose exercise can be beyond the pale, you can take free speech too far.
I got to catch up 🤔 mind is tough to focus with... gestures in a full 360° + circle.... 🤓 ❣ I know how tough it is to be liberal at heart with all good intentions towards life liberties and freedom of expression. But surrounded by 🤔 what ever these mag religious righteous rude trying to rule the day ignoramuses are pushing. I'm in Southern MA and it's not what I would have expected in this day and age. State is crazy diverse. Daily I piss someone off because as soon as they share their thoughts at my local Cumberland farms ☕🍕 or lumber yard 🤔 😠 I have fucks to give freely. Family and friends dealing with post transition are lucky if they avoid a day running into ignorance and intolerance. F'd up what people think they should inject into another's existence on a daily basis. Not just an individual's identity or sexual preference but are you working 12 hrs a day or why are you driving a 15 yrs old Pontiac instead of a F350 Silverado Tundra Titan Raming down the road with flags a flying. Sorry about my writing. Heading out to help an extended family member that's a bit older hippie ish and fun to talk to. Sorry for the rambles and thank you thank you for all you share Parker ❣ you and yours have been a source of hope and joy even when your ready to toss yourself through a window 🤓
