From me this week: projects and awards

A couple of weeks back, I tried something new: I had a conversation via blog posts. To see what that was all about, click the link below:

The Present Age
On Free Speech and Cancel Culture: Recap
This is a recap of the 6-part correspondence conversation between writers Freddie deBoer and Parker Molloy. My entries were originally published here, at The Present Age; Freddie’s were published at his Substack. Letters 1, 3, and 5 are by me; letters…

In other news, New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute named me the 2022 winner of the American Journalism Online Award for Best Media Criticism!

“Parker Molloy consistently scrutinizes mainstream media practices and challenges the public to hold news organizations accountable through her social media feeds and Substack publication,” wrote Brian Stelter. “She provides unique perspectives about corporate ownership, right-wing media misconduct, and news literacy. Her newsletter, The Present Age, should be an essential part of an informed citizen’s media diet.”

Pretty neat!

Anyway, sorry for the slow release schedule this week over here at The Present Age. I’ve been working on some projects I’m very excited for you all to see.

Work from others you should check out:

Jill Filipovic has a look at what’s happened in the first 100 days since the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade. It’s… a lot.

The First 100 Days
A little more than 100 days ago, a group of six reactionary far-right religious extremists, five of them appointed by presidents who lost the popular vote in their first term, stripped American women of our fundamental right to decide whether or not to carry a pregnancy to term. In doing so, they put us in league with s…

And on that topic, Jessica Valenti continues to be an absolute must-read.

All in Her Head by Jessica Valenti
Abortion, Every Day (10.5.22)
Listen now (16 min) | In the states… Absolutely not: Florida schools are requiring girls who play sports to fill out health forms with multiple questions about their periods, including the date they last menstruated and the average number of days between each of their periods. State school boards claim it’s just about athletes’ health, but…

Dan Pfeiffer has a smart piece about Herschel Walker and the politics of hypocrisy. Used to be that something like the recent news that the guy who wants to ban abortion in all situations has paid for at least one abortion would end his campaign. Those times are gone.

The Message Box
Herschel Walker and the Politics of Hypocrisy
Georgia has been on the mind of every Democratic strategist. Our Senate candidates are well-positioned against deeply flawed MAGA extremists in Arizona and New Hampshire; and yet, Senator Raphael Warnock remains in a very tight race with Herschel Walker. The fact that Raphael Warnock, a decent man and effective Senator, is in a dead heat with Herschel Walker, a man who held a gun to the head of his ex-wife, is enough to make one think American politics is irretrievably broken…

On the topic of Walker, Oliver Willis uses his Substack to urge Democrats to understand that while Walker’s abortion story probably won’t move a single solid-Republican vote (they really do not care about anything other than gaining power), Democrats shouldn’t throw their hands up in defeat.

Oliver Willis Explains
Nothing Works In Politics, Until You Try It -- So Try Everything
I happen to agree with people who think the recent revelations about Herschel Walker allegedly paying for an abortion while advocating for a national abortion ban are unlikely to cause him to lose much support among Republican voters. The same thought process applies to revelation…

And over at NBC, Ben Collins and Brandy Zadrozny have a story about the terror campaign far-right influencers are waging against doctors who provide health care to trans people, and how it mirrors the anti-abortion playbook. In short, right-wing influencers spread lies, rumors, and exaggerations about individual doctors, and let the raging hordes who follow them do the rest.

NEW from me + @BrandyZadrozny: Far-right influencers are targeting individual doctors — and they're stealing from the ‘anti-abortion playbook.’ nbcnews.com/tech/internet/…
