AI-generated image of Elmo setting fire to Twitter, on Mars. Image made in Midjourney and expanded with DALL-E.

I deleted Twitter from my phone about a week and a half ago. And while I still use it while at my computer, this has been a solid decision for me so far.

Breaking the (Twitter) habit
Happy early Halloween, folks. Lately, I find myself feeling a bit like everyone’s favorite questionably-literate fictional bar owner Charlie Kelly. Specifically, the Charlie Kelly of IASIP’s season 3 episode 2 cold open: A transcript, for those who can’t watch the clip right now…

If you want to know why there’s so much media coverage dedicated to crime (no, the answer isn’t that crime is up), look no further than the “Foxtober” phenomenon.

Another Successful 'Foxtober' Midterm Election is Under Way
A few weeks back, I chatted with The Recount’s Steve Morris about the tried and true Fox News strategy of rallying around something to freak out over as the midterms approach. In 2014, it was Ebola. In 2018, it was migrant caravans. In 2022, it’s crime. Here’s that video clip…

Substack gave me access to its new “chat” feature on iOS the other day, and so far, I’m into it.

New feature for The Present Age subscribers: group chat
Substack just gave me access to a new chat feature they’re rolling out for writers. Right now, it’s only available in the Substack iOS app, but I believe the plan is to expand it out to Android and desktop in the near-ish future. Without further ado, here’s how Substack describes this new feature…

The other day, I asked why all the mainstream media outlets that freaked out about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) tweeting that she was Googling how to make her own adobo after the Goya CEO praised Trump in 2020 didn’t seem all that interested in Sen. Tom Cotton (R-OK) threatening to punish GM for speech he didn’t like. The press seems to only care about “cancel culture” when it fits the “this is a left-wing phenomenon!” narrative.

The Present Age
A Republican Senator Threatened to Punish a Company for Speech, But the Press Didn't Care
On July 9, 2020, then-President Donald Trump held an event at the White House Rose Garden as part of his administration's Hispanic Prosperity Initiative. Among the guests was Robert Unanue, CEO of Goya Foods. And while these events are usually pretty yawn-worthy for how commonplace they are across administrations — business leaders show up, shake hands…
