Can't stand not being the center of attention, not even for a minute. "How dare those figure skaters take all the attention away from MEEEE!" he cries. And did he succeed in bringing our attention back to him? He did, and that's all the "strategy" right there.
Absolutely agree Trump frames current events -- from the stock market to disasters -- to fit his ideology; however, his timing for lying about the causes of this recent airline crash coinciding with senate testimony of his arguably most controversial cabinet picks, especially rfk jr and kash patel, smacks of an effort (largely successful) to distract from these two obviously unqualified and stupid candidates as well as their bullshit testimonies and thoughtless. The mainstream media, especially the ny times, sure fell for it, eagerly and thoughtlessly.
I don't know about this "distraction" thing, we know Trump's entire presidency will be a shitshow, one awful thing after another, is awful thing #1765 an attempt to distract us from awful thing #1764? I don't want to impute to "strategy" what can be explained by simple incompetence and awfulness.
Point taken. My response is that trump's reactions are less strategy or even some imaginary playbook and more like impulses that bubble up from his seething rage and hate, like his devoted maga followers. "If you wanna know what caused the airliner-helicopter crash it's obvious -- dei! What else would it be? Disagree with me or question me and I'll dox your ass. One of my idiots will burn your house or fuck you up."
It's hard for journalists to deal with the criminal. I suggest that every media outlet that feels obligated to cover him set up a separate place on their site or in their printed material, maybe call it Trump Speaks. Put a transcript of his dribble in that section. Do not translate it into English. Do not sane-wash it. Do not treat it as something real. Just let people read for themselves.
Do not quote his henchmen. Say Press Secretary Whatshername or Senator Goober amplified or backtracked from what Trump said, which you can read here.
Republicans do not use words to convey reality. They use words to hide reality.
I'm trying to exercise some discipline in what I click on, more than I did the first time around. "Trump says..." or "Margorie Taylor-Greene says..." or "Idiot Republican says..." do NOT get a click from me any more. When the stupid shit they say turns into a policy, and the policy hurts people, I'll direct my attention to the victims, who deserve my attention far more than he does. If anyone is doing anything constructive or helpful or useful in the form of resisting him, those people will get my attention too. I'm just sick of the worst people in the world hogging all my attention.
Yesterday, I heard a CBS News correspondent ask an aide to former Secretary Pete Buttigieg about Trump’s wacky accusations that Pete was somehow responsible for lax airline safety. He tried to couch his questions thusly: “I know these are hard questions but he’s the President, and because he says this, we have to ask you about it.” NO, they don’t. They don’t have to follow down every rat hole Trump’s gone down, “because he’s the President”. They don’t have to give his blathering the gloss of legitimacy because he happens to be squatting in the White House.
Personally, I'd just go with "Awful Man Says Awful Thing, No One Surprised" every damn time.

But the failed media WANTS to repeat his claims. It's so much less work than actually performing the vital function of the fourth estate.

NPR Sucks! They have pandered to the GOP and lost all credibility from before Trumps first term. No pledge for you!
To me it’s the same as saying I only use Facebook and X to stay in touch with my friends. The money finds its way to harm the same way.
I don't mind giving to my local carrier. I know that means giving to NPR but I value the local reporting that my station does. So...they get my money.
Also I really wish would stop calling NPR "left wing." They're centrist at best.

"We'll help the fascist spread his propaganda, but I promise we'll feel bad about it all the way to the bank."
Trump and his cronies need to be held to account. But I fear that our mainstream media is too damaged and broken to do anything about it!
The NPR story DID start out with the words "without evidence." It should have been in the headline.
The headlines either need to get more exact in the era of Trump or the taglines (if they exist) will have to start doing some heavy lifting.
