Here’s my latest accepted comment at NYTimes re Dowd’s recent piece on AI:
The word "cannibalism" comes to mind. . . Nothing like ripping off almost the entire archives of humans with machines, then take all the profits from that enterprise and call it your own to sell and make available mostly behind paywalls.
If anything, any enterprise that is pretending to own all that data is a thief unless it shares all profits from such thievery with all humans on earth. A cut of the profits from our collective property. We created what it currently claims to harvest and own. Each and every one of us and the archives of ancestors.
Soylent Green should be the official Pantone color for 2027. To remind us of how much toxic capitalism has eaten us up.
AI's broligarchy is not the only cannibal tribe among the toxic capitalists. Cannibalism of all types rule far and wide. Since it is such a powerful and stealthy trend, we should make it visible to remind us of what is really going on. Pantone's Official 2027 Color should be Soylent Green #218B76. Yah, that's the ticket!
The speakers’ comments would hit maybe a little differently if they weren’t coming from the very people who are making AI “inevitable” so they can make money from it.
There's a real irony in Schmidt blaming "The Algorithm" for inducing fear of AI -- I'd say "The Algorithm" was the predecessor to AI as an avatar for capitalism: "The Algorithm" made it clear that you, users, are "The Product" -- very explicit exploitation of the people for the financial benefits of the owners of social media companies.
AI spending, circular investment, and debt has created a financial bubble which will either deflate slowly with adequate regulation (not likely under this administration) or suddenly, like dotcom and CDSs on low-grade mortgages. These booing grads are not going to think well of the techbros and politicians who let that happen. That could have serious political ramifications. Smart politicians will start calling for restraints on AI now.

If Ed Zitron's reporting is to be believed, then the only company making money in the AI "boom" is Nvidia. Everybody else is just burning VC.

I hope for her sake Caulfield is better at selling real estate than she is selling college graduates on AI. Big oof.
Heckuva job, Glendale! AI, mission accomplished!
