This rings so true to me! When the 2016 primaries were happening, all my liberal friends were laughing and joking about Trump and saying there was no way he'd get elected -- and I tried to tell them that they'd completely misunderstood how Republicans thought/believed/acted because they just couldn't imagine, in a rational world, how anyone would end up in that position. It was absolute hubris, based on the presumed rationality of their fellow Americans. I'm an immigrant, a naturalized American, from a much more liberal environment in Europe (well, the UK, which is no longer part of Europe due to the same unhinged "patriotism") and as a long-time Labour supporter, I could totally see how the Conservative worldview operated, outside of reality, and that it is almost impossible to argue points with these people...
