I love the new format! It's nice to get bite-sized Parker thoughts on the other things, while still getting a bigger serving on a different topic. I'll be curious to hear how it affects the way that you approach the newsletter.
I live in western NY state, and it's been the news media's best-kept secret that we've been suffering from wildfire smoke for the last 2 weeks, first from northwestern Canada and now from Quebec. It's thick enough to have affected our sunsets, and the smell of smoke is still inside my home. Hardly any word was uttered by the NWS or the news media until the smoke started reaching the east coast. But wait...everybody knows that nobody lives in western NY. New York always means New York City.
It's climate change. Duh. Climate change seems only to be an important issue for big cities, nobody mentions it until it's about New York City even though the rest of the state has cities, too. It also has farms and orchards that produce everything from peaches and cherries to apples and sunflowers. We haven't had any rain in over 2 weeks and are desperate for rain to come and wash the smoke out of the air.
I haven't been able to find a public list of corporate sponsors or parade participants for Twin Cities pride either, I'm really wondering how many "supportive" local employers will chicken out
I went to the Pride Parade here in Milwaukee this last weekend. There was a sizable contingent of K0hl's employees marching. No Targ3t AFAIK (I had to leave after 90 mins. and I haven't been able to find a comprehensive list.) K0hl's had actually had a bomb threat a day or two before.
"Zaslav and Malone don’t seem to care — they just want CNN to meet their ideological demands."
Yeah, that's exactly it. Elon Musk was willing to throw away $20 billion or so just to see more right-wing views on Twitter, these guys are the same story, although they haven't lost quite that much YET.
It’s funny. It used to be that you could at least count on business people doing whatever would make the most profit. Now rich guys like Zaslav and Musk seem determined to lose as much money as possible in pursuit of their right wing goals.
Instead of “go woke and go broke” we should be saying “go right and go broke.”
I very much enjoy the new format, Parker, but hope you still fit in some in-depth features from time to time as well. 🙂
Also, as a note, I went to Philly Pride this past weekend and it was FILLED with people and teeming with such great energy. I didn't see many corporate sponsors (if any), but thankfully I also didn't see any bigots doing their bigoty thing either. It was refreshing and encouraging to see just how many people came out to the festival and how positive an experience it was.
I just don’t understand why every long story I’ve read about what Licht did wrong was written by a guy. He was clearly just another white dude who got more opportunity than his capabilities warranted. An absolute moron from beginning to end.
Went Asbury Pride this weekend and it was an absolute blast. Didn’t see a single Proud Boy or fellow traveler.
“… Fox has, unsurprisingly, been telling its viewers that it is “insanity” to wear N95 masks to mitigate the harm caused by the smoke.”
You’d think that right wing outlets like Fox would be trying to keep its mostly old and vulnerable viewers alive rather than encouraging them to do crazy things like breathing smoke that will kill them.
But I also at first thought the same thing about Covid. I figured that Trump (and other conservatives) would go all in on protecting his old and decrepit voters from the virus rather than encouraging them to die. But I was wrong about that one too.
So, I’ve begun to think the Republican Party really has become a death cult.
I like the new format, but I like the old one, too, so I'm good either way. The Pat Robertson thing is funny. Proof the universe has a sense of humor, if not justice. 🙂
I can’t say I’m surprised with the “I won’t live my life in fear” conspiracy crowd advising against precautions when the sky is literally sepia-toned
I bet they refuse to admit it smells like smoke or that their eyes are burning with irritation. Or maybe they just feel it’s a mild inconvenience. Or somehow election related

Yeah, this year just feels very... different
Instagram on May 25. I knew I saw it somewhere.

Speaking of businesses that have caved this week… how about that LIV/PGA merger?
Oooof, yeah. Not exactly a high point for the PGA's reputation. Or humanity, generally
FOX News: If you're suffering from all this smoke, try pulling yourself up by your bootstraps.

They left logic behind long ago
“I won’t live my life in fear”
Leave off the last four words and you've got it about right.
