“Objective” = “We only credulously retype HALF of conservatives’ lies!” Go Unwoke, Go Broke I guess.

But for real, it’s a depressing situation. The people with enough money to fund journalism have just kinda decided nah.

It's almost as if the intention was to weaken other news outlets (à la Musk's insanely expensive ongoing destruction of Twitter) by leaching talent & attention from them.

Meanwhile, who/what exactly was on the receiving end of $50M being blown in a year … a wee bit of money laundering on the side, perhaps?

One ray of sunshine I saw in this is just the reminder of how many excellent nonprofit journalism outfits are now working. I subscribe to ProPublica, but I'm happy to see so many others pursuing the same model. It's hard to get journalism to pay, but not having some billionaire up at the top sucking up all the money like a demented vampire squid might help?

It’s just so obvious money is ‘being moved around’, rather than put to its stated use. Maybe one of the more independent outfits could follow the money for us?

Just specifically about political reporting: The vast majority of people who want political reporting have a loyalty to one side or the other, it's what keeps them interested, and then of course they want news that's tailored to the people on their "team", now that that's an option. And people who don't have any loyalty to one side or another, the vast majority of them it's because they don't really care about politics, so they don't want any political reporting at all. The set of people who want to read political reporting but have not, at this point in their lives, developed any loyalty to one side or the other is just vanishingly small.

It's like with football or any other sport: People who want news about football almost always have a favorite team they follow, and they want sports news "skewed" towards coverage of their favorite team. On the other hand, I am perfectly neutral and objective when it comes to football teams, because I truly don't give a shit about football. How much "neutral and objective" football news would I want? Zero.

Somehow, conservative media will spin this to say it's the employees' fault for not seeing it coming.

My absolute favorite NFL writer Mike Tanier ran his traditional weekly columns there this season. I’m sure he will land on his feet, but it sucks for anyone to have the rug pulled out from under them. And Mike lost his original home when Football Outsiders Ass-ploded last year.
