When I was a reporter at the Bakersfield Californian in 2007-2009, the paper would cover speeches and talks with Republican politicians and just let them speak, but when left-wingers had rallies or speeches, I had to go find Republicans to put their counterpoint into the article. Same as it ever was.

Viewers and newspaper readers have historically functioned as watchdogs keeping the media from skewing its course away from fact-based coverage and toward hidden and not-so-hidden agendas. The media tends to lean Republican regardless of who is in power, and yet people seldom notice anymore. Newspapers provide the most detailed coverage of events, and yet (as I read recently), two US papers close down every day. Add this to the batshit crap you find on social media, and the result is millions of low-information and disinformation voters.

Somebody, please go to the Washington Post and read the story about a Postal Service official the Post saw fit to accuse of being drunk on the job without any substantiated evidence. This is the kind of reporting WaPo has been featuring lately.

I'm glad there are more people talking about the supposedly mainstream center media moving to the right. I read stuff and I'm like "Okay, I'm super left-wing so maybe I'm reading more into this article than most folks but this sure feels like a right-wing commentary to me..."

Just today I was reading the leader of The Economist and feeling like I'd accidentally started reading some far-right website instead. ("Wake up, Democrats")

My partner is much more conservative than I am and they said they consider The Economist to be very factual and only slightly conservative from a European p.o.v. so we were both a bit surprised about this piece... But it does seem to be a trend across the board, sadly.

Yeah and also their idea of liberal columnists is pricks like Fareed Zakaria who can't even advocate for an infrastructure bill without needlessly crapping on trans people in the very last sentence of the article: https://twitter.com/PostOpinions/status/1547735552694226946

Thanks for deflating the high I got from watching the January 6th hearings today. Jk, but I think that the revelations that keep coming out, as great as they are, are dependent on an actual independent, unbiased media to present them properly to everyone who didn't watch or refused to watch the hearings. The committee is doing an amazing job of putting together a narrative about Trump and his enablers almost stealing an election. Are the diehards going to shift their views and lose their faith in Messiah Trump, the way that one guy from Ohio who pleaded guilty did? Clearly not if they watch right wing media. But what if they read the NYT or the WaPo, or watch CNN? are they going to get the full picture of what happened? Our democracy may depend on it.
